and just yesterday I was checking your blog on the progress of FP7... time to quote Ren and Stimpy "Happy happy joy joy joy"

Nice work guys, finally Pocket PC and Flash Lite 2.0 are up to the same ActionScript standard. I am so happy to see Flash 6 being history.

Awesome! My graduate project in mobile technology required web services and now I can breeze through my research because of this.

This is great!
Do you know if the StandAlone Application cost anything? Like the current PocketPC 2003 StandAlone player does? (Which I think was too expensive!)

What about video support?

I am running Windows Mobile 5. My company dev Flash based e-learning products run across the internet.

Question: How do I get Flash 7 installed onto my Pocket PC when the download is a cab file, not and executable?

By Anonymous Andrew Longhurst , at Tue Apr 04, 02:30:00 AM PDT

It would be great if flash player 7 Distribution Kit comes with an example of some XML data driven projects. thanks..

By Anonymous Anonymous , at Tue Apr 04, 03:42:00 AM PDT

@ Andrew Longhurst
This is MUCH better than an installer.. you can just download it directly to the PDA without using a computer. If you still want to use your compyter, then just download, COPY it to your PDA, and then OPEN in your PDA.

But this is BRILIANT NEWS!
Bill, one question, why doesn't Macromedia publish Flash-plugin for PDA-end-users just like for windows/Mac users?

By Anonymous Oscar , at Tue Apr 04, 05:56:00 AM PDT

Hi Bill,

The release of the new Flash Player is great! I just thought I would give some feedback about what I have found from playing around over the past few days.

First off, I haven't really noticed much of a preformance change in comparison to FP6, but I am guessing we just need better PDA's to test on. I like the fact that now we can have .flv playback on our mobile devices without going through a Flash Media Server. The only problem with embedded .flv files is that the machines can not handle playing them, or at least the devices I have tested on can't. 400Mhz does not seem to be enough to playback smooth video, the video plays fine for 2 seconds, then needs 1 to buffer and so on. Accessing a built-in camera within Flash would also be a great feature to the Flash player, but I am not sure how hard that would be to make that possible.

Other than those few things the new player looks promising, any chance Adobe will look at the way .flv playback is working and see if they can't get something a little smoother running? To me it seems like a fairly important piece for the Flash Player 7 to really stand out on mobile devices.

Thanks for the new player!

Regards,
--Nick

Bill regarding the request on the mm Adobe handheld forum asking developers to voice their opinions about what the would like to see in the new flash player. What functionality has been added to new flash player 7 that is specific to PDA devices, i guess what i want to know is how much of the functionality requested by developers has been added to new version if any?

I have tried installing to PDA direct from download page - tried to open file like document -- tried downloading to PPC and then opeing it but get an "there is no application associated with *.* - run applicatin first, then open within the application -- how do I install Flash 7 on my device?

Thanks!

Good blog! I was trying to access www.youtube.com the other day (recommendation from my daughter, 15) and the site told me that I had an old version of Flash Player and needed to download the latest. In actuality I had none, so I was happy to see that macromedia had relented and released FP7. I installed it, but I still can't open flash content on the web. I gtet the same message. Am I missing something here?
thanks!!

If I'm not mistaking, youtube uses flash 8 encoded flv's...with the newer codec. I don't know if fp7 for pocketpc supports that.
youtube probably has a check for fp8, so you would get that warning anyway.

While running as an ActiveX control is there a way to tell if Internet Explorer is not the active application? Some event? Something I can set a listener for?

It would be nice to pause the playhead, sound or video files if IE is not the front most application.

I need guidance on playing Flash on mobile devices. I have a specific requirement of creating elearning content for Windows CE.NET 4.2. I would like to know if flash lite or flash player 6/7 will work on Windows CE. Can anyone guide me to resources where i could find more information on the same. Pls send me your reply on gungupta@hotmail.com

I'm trying to get flash content on a windows ce 4.2 device, I've downloaded the players (tried both 6 & 7) but still no flash content is displayed in ie. What am I doing wrong ? Why can't I see flash content ?

By Anonymous Anonymous , at Mon Jun 12, 04:19:00 AM PDT

Unfortantely the Flash Player 7 for PPC will not work on Windows CE devices. For those devices it requires an OEM to license the FP7 SDK from Adobe and to port their own specific version for their device.

what pda's does flash 7 work on? I can't install it to a ppc 2003 ipaq 3000 series and 4000 series...says "error no application associated with this file 000setup" etc.

do the files need to go in the IE folder? it's embarrassing to know flash 8 but not be able to play a file on the pda.

Hello all!

I have been Interested in Flash video for mobile for a long time I think it would be cool to see a youtube flash video player.

What I have done in the past when I was messing around with some of the old flash lite 1.1 sdk file was renamed one flash files from the Windows Smartphone Tutorial and it played great but needs some action script to exit, other wise I had to just stop the app from running.

Im on a wifi sp5m now, I think Ill try it streaming.

This site is cool I never been here before.

Hello,

I create animation for kids with flash professional 8, I need to watch them on windows CE .net 5.0. I tried it; the sound of the animation is very good and clear but the animation is too bad, there are some characters not working properly and are not displayed on the screen.

I changed the publish settings to flash 5, the animation worked very well but the sound didn’t work. I tried to embed a sound file on the timeline without animations. It worked but very fast, you cant understand the song. I reduced the number of frames per second to 0.5 frames/second. The sound became better, but still there’s something wrong, the sound is like I don’t know...” jumping a little”.

If you have any information about this issue, I wish you can help me…

Thanks in advance.

It could be due to several factors including things like simultaneous tweens, alpha usage, masking, etc... Mobile devices such as phones and PDAs have limited hardware capabilities when compared to desktop PCs.

What I would recommend doing is publishing your SWF files as version 7 and make sure you're using the FP7 for PPC on your device. If you're still experiencing issues with the playback of your content I would recommend taking a look at your source file to see if there are things you can tweak (mentioned above).

Good luck.

Hien,
Like others, i'm wondering how i can play movie clips from youtube.com. I have a tmobile MDA II with Windows CE 5.0. I installed macromedia flash player active x, adobe flash lite2.0, and flash 7.0. Is there something that i'm still missing before i can play a movie file from youtube? Or do i have to wait til flash 8.0 to come out?

Flash for dummies?

I downloaded the flash first 6 and then 7 and installed it on my windows mobile 2003. Then i copied over a *.swf file.

I tried to open the *.swf file in Internet Explorer on the PDA.

Nothing! The type was not recognised?

Some help for the dummies?

By Anonymous Anonymous , at Sun Dec 10, 10:47:00 AM PST

I'm thinking about getting the new T-Mobile Dash, and I am very interested in learning as to whether Flash Player 7 would work in that interface.

This phone has Windows Mobile 5.0, but I think that it is too new to have many forum sites announcing its compatibility.

Any light you could should on this would be absolutely awesome.

Flash Player 7 won't work (unless there's some kind of hack): you get the "not intended for this device" error. Flash Lite 2.1 works great but has certain limitations that require roundabout solutions: you can't control the camera, for instance.

It's neat to see your app on your phone!

I have a T-mobile dash, and I can't seem to get anything flash to run.

I have Flash lite 2.1, but it requires active-x. Where do I get active x for me T-mobile dash?

I tried to install FP7, but installation failed.

By Blogger Iron Bowl , at Wed Jan 17, 08:13:00 AM PST

The flash player activeX won't open .swf files or let you load them in IE. Would be a nice feature to add in for the next release though :)

For now you'll have to embed them in a web page, or download some 3rd party software to open flash files using the activeX.

Such as this one....

http://smartflash.en.softonic.com/ie/54374

Works with WM5, using the softkeys and goes fullscreen :D works great on my HTC wizard.

There are probably others, google it.

By the time we get flash player 8 for PPC to watch youtube etc videos, flash player 9 will probably be out for PC and we'll be in the same situation again... Sod's law :P

I am a PPC newbie and can't seem to solve this flash issue that I am having. I get an error on the IE page saying that "I can't find out if you have Flash installed. You need Flash 6 and above to run this application." I have tried Flash 6, 7, and Lite 2.1, but none of them solved the problem. An example website would be www.nba.com. Please help.

By Anonymous Anonymous , at Tue Feb 13, 10:40:00 AM PST

For any one wanting to watch youtube on a ppc using flash, it is posible but the default player on youtube requres flash 8 or 9 witch hasn't been released for ppc, you can however make your own player but in my experiance the playback speed is horible as flash hasn't realy been optimized.
Regulare flash movies and small gmaes works fine though.

I have a Ipaq 111 and i cant get any flash videos to run. Am i missing anything or what??

By Anonymous Anonymous , at Mon Nov 05, 07:56:00 PM PST

In order to view Flash videos (FLV) files you need to have Flash Player 7 for PPC installed on your iPAQ. I haven't tested that device but you can download it here (http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer_pocketpc/downloads/player.html) install it and see what happens.

Best,
Bill

The fp7 for pocket pc cannot be installed in windows mobile 4.21.
The error message said "The program is not compatible with the current operating system and, therefore, may not run on this device. Do you want to continue?"
