Verizon Wireless Chocolate - First Flash Lite UI Phone in the US
For over 15 months we (Macromedia/Adobe) have been talking and showing examples of phones that use Flash Lite for the UI. Today there are quite a few Samsung and LG handsets in Korea that already are using Flash Lite to improve the user experience and they're great examples of how creativity and functionality can come together.

Now those of you living in the US can see and own this technology thanks to the new Verizon Wireless LG VX8500 phone, or otherwise known as the "Chocolate". This phone was originally released by LG in Korea last year and 2 weeks ago it was released here for Verizon Wireless. The phone itself is a great form factor- it's thinner and lighter than my Nokia N80, nice glossy black finish and the heat-sensitive controls on the face of the phone are cool.

Here's a quick video clip I shot demonstrating the various ways that Flash Lite is being used as UI elements of the chocolate phone: wallpaper and levels 1-3 of the phone menus.

In addition to using Flash Lite for these UI elements, this phone will also support the Flash Lite for BREW extension - we're currently testing this handset and will release more details in the future. So when I'm able to get Flash Lite 2.1 applications running on this phone I'll let everyone know.

Cool!

I was just checking out the Flash promo the other day, but had no idea it was running a FLUI ...

I had speculated it would be running FL4B, though which is why I was looking at the promo ... speaking of which, here it is (a decent piece of Flash work to boot):

They are advertising it all over the place. Looking forward to checking it out first hand.

any idea if the chocolate will have FL player in the UK soon?

Very nice. I'd be curious to know how the settings are being changed via Flash though. Custom MMI?

I think I should rephrase my previous post ^_^. I see that Flash is only responsible for levels 1-3, but how is the Flash calling the phone's interface for the deeper menus?

Wow!

Thanks Bill, this is great news! The phone does look slick. I was trying to tune out the ads for it, as the campaign is very seductive. Sadly, since I'm a Flash Lite junkie, I will now have to buy this phone and use it to develop UIs (LOL). You can see just from the video that the interface is much more attractive and dynamic that any North American handset I've witnessed.

One 2.1 is running on it, I will be completely sold. Finally I won't feel so much envy of the Japanese market!

1) No idea of the Chocolate phone coming to a UK operator.
2) There isn't a way for a user to create their own UI in Flash for the phone - only what's pre-installed.
3) UI is using Flash Lite MMI. MMI APIs allow for deeper device integration and control.
4) The Japanese market still has a lot for us to learn from ;o)

Bill, why do you say LG-8500 is a first Flash Lite UI handset in US? We succesfully use LG-8300 from Verizon Wireless third month already. :) But the UI is realized with FL 1.1 there, and uses undocumented commands to get some environment variables - calls and messages history, etc. Does LG-8500 use FL 2.1 for UI?

Oops... I've missed about Flash Lite MMI. But nevertheless, does Flash Lite MMI use syntax of FL 1.1 or 2.1?

When will Verizon be launching Flash services in the USA. I know the Chocolate has been released, but that is only a small step.
