In Labs: Flash Lite 2.1 for Windows Mobile 5.0
Flash Lite 2.1 for Windows Mobile 5.0
I'm very happy to announce that we now have a preview release of Flash Lite 2.1 for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices - including Smartphones and Pocket PCs. You can get all of the details on Adobe Labs including release and developer notes, documentation and installers.

We also have created a new discussion forum, Flash Lite: Windows Mobile where you can post your questions about developing Flash Lite content for these devices.

Some things you should know:
- This is a preview release of Flash Lite 2.1 for Windows Mobile 5.0. We're providing this to the broad developer community to allow you to test and provide feedback before it becomes final.
- We're working on some new device profiles for Flash Professional 8 to allow you to test your content. These should be available within the next few weeks.
- Both standalone and ActiveX plug-in are supported so you can view SWF content either way.
- We're working on some sample files for you to reference and will have those available soon.

The biggest questions will come from Flash developers who have used the Flash Player 7 or 6 for Pocket PC devices. Now there are 2 choices for developers - Flash Lite 2.1 or Flash Player 7. Each have their pros and cons and by next week we'll have a detailed comparison chart of the features of each so as a developer you can determine which version is the best choice for your application or development needs.

In a broader view what we've done is enabled Flash Lite developers to start targeting their application development for more than one platform using the same source files but changing things such as the stage size, video/audio formats and other related visual elements. Developers can reuse their ActionScript code with no or minimal changes. Now developers can create Flash Lite 2.1 content for BREW and Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. Within 2 weeks I will be posting some sample files that better demonstrate this process to help get the point across.

If you have any additional questions please post them in the discussion forum so everyone can benefit from the threads.

I'd like to implement an external application that talks to my flash content. I really need the flash8 feature "ExternalInterface". Do you have any idea how to implement that in flash lite 2.1? I want my code to execute syncrounsly

thanks

WTF?!

I wait a live for a StandAlone Player in PocketPc and now, the StandAlone is for FlashLite 2.1!!!

I'm happy at the end, but... it's really strange, no? O_o

Bye!

It's a good sound "using the same source files", but the difference in realization does not allow to do this on different platforms.

For examples:
1. The distinction of methods to make call and to send sms on BREW and other devices

2. The difference of optimal frame rates for different devices

3. The different delay to get real stage properties after fullscreen command (I wrote on forum)

4. Restricted some symbols in phone numbers for different platforms

5. Existed or not the confirmations for user actions (connect to network)

6. Error handling for different player is different too.

7. Different methods to provide an available space for Flash Player

8. Pressed key repeater in class 'Key' works on WM5 only

etc...

As to me, I'm not the same optimist in Flash platform independence, than a few years ago.

1) You can use the XMLSockets feature in Flash Lite 2.1 to communicate with an external application.

2) Yep, now you have more choices for WM5 devices.

3) Alex - you bring up some points and we're looking at providing more specific use cases and sample files for developers to understand the availalbe platforms.

Thanks Bill,

I understand you well. May be it would be useful to create a document for developers with all differences between FL players (for BREW, WM5, S60, etc.)? Sometimes it requires a lot of time to work around to reach a real compatibility.

Once again, thanks for your answeres - we have released already XML Socket server for BREW and we work through it with external applications and file system.

Good luck,
Alex

Alex- we are working on this exact type of document and hope to have it ready by MAX US. I'm interested in hearing more about your XML sockets solution for FL and BREW - please email me b perry at adobe dot com.

thanks for the answer bill, anyway there's no hope to have a similar feature for flash lite 2.0?

if you're referring to XML sockets in Flash Lite 2.0 then the answer is no, it will not be supported. XML sockets is only supported in Flash Lite 2.1.
