Flash Lite 2.1 Standalone Player for Symbian Devices Now Available for Free!
Symbian S60If you've been interested in taking your existing Flash skills into the mobile space but were waiting for the right time, or you're existing mobile developer who is looking for a robust set of features, now might be a good time. I'm happy to announce that developers and end users can now download the Flash Lite 2.1 standalone player for supported Symbian devices for free!.

If you're not familiar with Flash Lite 2.1, it's based on the Flash 7 standard for content and contains the following features:
  • XML Sockets
  • Inline text support
  • Dynamic XML data
  • Device video playback
  • Persistent data
  • Powerful and dynamic media
  • Text enhancements
  • Action Script 2.0 support
  • Synchronized device sound
  • Compressed SWFs
If you have one of the following Nokia S60 handsets you can download a free SIS installer:

Nokia S60 3rd edition
- E50, E60, E61, E62, E70, N71, N72, N73, N75, N80, N91, N92, N93, 3250, 5500, 5500 sport

Nokia S60 2nd edition, feature pack 3
- N70, N90

Nokia S60 2nd edition, feature pack 2
- 6630, 6680, 6681, 6682

Copy the SIS file to your handset and install the player. After it's installed you will find a new icon called "Flash" - this is for Flash Lite 2.1. If you have a S60 3rd edition device you will have Flash Lite 1.1 pre-installed, and will have 2 icons. Both versions of Flash Lite can be on your handset at the same time and Flash Lite 2.1 is backwards compatible with 2.0 and 1.1 content.

A couple of things to mention:
  • These new players are not IMEI locked, meaning you don't have to provide your handsets serial number before downloading the installer.
  • As part of the EULA you agree to not redistribute the installer.
  • This is only the standalone player; no other content type (wallpaper for example) is supported in this player.
There is additional information you can read about in the Adobe Flash Lite 2.1 Open OS FAQ that's posted on our mobile and devices dev center. There's a lot of good information in there that will answer most of your questions. If you have any additional questions you can post them here and I'll be answering them.

Also we have removed the Flash Lite 2.0 and 1.1 players from the Adobe online store since you can now get Flash Lite 2.1 for free.

Stay tuned, additional Flash Lite news to be posted soon...

Hi Bill,

If you removed 1.1 and 2.0 from the shop, how about the phones don't support 2.1 but lower? Like I couldn't see 6600 in 2.1 list, but it can play 1.1 content.

Uur.-

Great news, a real step in the right direction.

Are there any plans to distribute this over-the-air?

Are there any plans for a distribution license for content providers?

Cheers

This is really great news bill. I have been running a flash mobile business, but its been a bit dormant lately.
Think this could be the day when flash on mobiles is finally born.
Thankyou

Hi Bill,

Excellent news! But seriously, the download experience has to be easier. One welcome addition would be to add your list of supported phones to the actual download page at Adobe. I had no idea if I had a 3rd edition or 2nd edition Feature Pack 2 or 3...

By Anonymous Mads , at Wed Dec 06, 02:41:00 AM PST

i like Mads's suggestion about the download experience.

just suppose a user buys my FL app from handango or my website, i'll for sure put a note that if he don't have FL player, he can get free from Adobe's website.

but when he get to Adobe's website, he'll have to register for new Adobe ID to get the player.

I think it'd be cool if Adobe allow to download FL player without registering, just like FP for desktops.

also, why not create a XHTML-MP page for mobile phones on Adobe's website with link to download FL player? This way the user can download the FL player directly on his cellphone. what you say?

best,

Hi Bill,

With the file association not working with FL2.1 it totally screws up creating an icon for users to click from the menu.

Is there a way around this? Can we call the fl2.1 from the launcher and if so what is the path/file to call?

Can someone from Adobe address this critical issue because no one is going to click on a second flash icon and then scroll until they find a specific swf...

How can the handango tie in work without the ability to call the right player from a paid for piece of software?

Users will not use FL2.1 products if this is left like this...

Hi,
Can some one help me out in getting the Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian s60 3rd edition, for my Nokia E62? The Adobe site asks me to enter an Id, which i dont have, but does not give me a link on how to create the same.

Can you kindly help me on this?

By Anonymous Anonymous , at Mon Dec 18, 02:34:00 AM PST

you need to sign-up and create an account on the Adobe site.

Hello, I need some advice.
I have bought an N70 hearing that it is flash lite 2.0 compatible, originally thinking i can download and pay for 2.0 from adobe's site. However, reading this and attempting to do so from adobe's site has proven very confusing.
I have tried all the 2.1 downloads, 2 of which successfully installed - however on testing it says 'unknown file format'.

I am on t-mobile with 'web n walk' - do you know whether flash will work in mobile web browsers if flash lite is installed?

Thanks, Clare

Hey Mr. Bill

I'm very upset with the this major release, I've installed the version 2.1 of flash lite into my new nokia e62 but doesn't work at all brothehood.
So, at the handsets list at adobe site says that supports only until e61 fl1.1, what about fl2.1?
I just bought a new mobile phone because of that.

Poor man I'm.

I'd like to hear back from you.

Best

Hi Bill,

I would like to know if Nokia E65 supports Flash Lite 2.1? Thanks.

By Anonymous Anonymous , at Mon Apr 09, 03:51:00 AM PDT

The Nokia E65 will support Flash Lite 2.0.

By Blogger Bill , at Mon Apr 09, 12:07:00 PM PDT

So E65 will support flash lite 2.0, but how about version 2.1? Does it supports 2.1?

By Anonymous Anonymous , at Tue Apr 10, 02:21:00 AM PDT

Technically it could support our free developer version of the FL2.1 standalone player that we offer today for Nokia S60 3rd edition devices. However we're testing to see if the same free FL2.1 player will work on new Nokia S60 3rd edition feature pack 1 OS handsets, like the E65. I'll make a blog posting once I know more.

Can I have a question:
I waited for so long for this opportunity to come because "Flash Lite 2.1 Standalone Player" is base on Macromedia Flash Player 7 in which,, this will allow cellphone users to browse, view, watch and play youtube videos since youtube prerequisite is to have Macromedia Flash Player 7.0+ but my dreams won't come true because youtube required latest flash player??

My Question:
1. Am I the only one who has this problem to view youtube.
2. Is this "Flash Lite 2.1 Standalone Player" can play youtube videos?
3. Is there any setup or configuration in using Flash Lite 2.1 Standalone Player" to work perfectly

A Quick response or suggestion is greatly appreciated.
