FITC Toronto Flash Lite Conference Guide
A special thanks to Thomas Joos for creating a Flash Lite conference guide for FITC Toronto. Like most conference guides, this mobile version includes information for all of the sessions, room locations, map of the conference location and a basic twitter client to stay in touch with friends- very cool. It will work on all Nokia S60 3rd edition or later devices and you can get more information as well as download installer files from his site.

Tomorrow during my session I'll be showing this application and other examples of how developers and brands are creating mobile applications that act as an extension of current/future web and desktop experiences.

Speaking about Flash Across Screens at FITC Toronto
FITC Toronto 2008
My first speaking event this year will be at FITC Toronto and my session is titled "Flash Across Screens". In addition to showing how to create Flash Lite content I will be discussing distribution opportunities so developers can understand what options they have. For my session I'll also highlight an example of a developer using the Adobe Flash platform to create multi-screen experiences for the web (Flash), desktop (AIR) and mobile (Flash Lite).

They haven't posted the session schedule so I'm not sure what time I'll be presenting but keep checking their site for updates. As I'm still working on my presentation let me know any specific areas or topics you'd like me to cover so I can make it as interactive as possible.

Flash Mobile Session at FITC Amsterdam
FITC Amsterdam
For those of you who will be attending FITC Amsterdam and are interested in learning more about creating Flash content and applications for mobile phones, make sure you attend Mark Doherty's session "Flash on Mobile Devices" (Tuesday from 5:15-6:15pm). You can expect to see some cool new examples of Flash Lite applications that have been developed by a wide range of companies and hear how you can get started with mobile if you're currently creating web based Flash experiences.

An Extra Phone Battery Can Be Your Best Friend
Carry an extra battery for your phone if you're attending a conference or will be using it for an extended period of time. I can honestly say that this little piece of advice has saved me from embarrassing moments when demoing applications to people and the phone's battery is dead - not cool.

When you're at work or home, being able to plug your phone in to charge is second nature. However if you're walking around a show floor or in meetings you'll run into two problems: finding a power outlet and finding time to charge your phone.

One Day to Go Until the Start of Mobile World Congress
Barcelona
I'm here in Barcelona and it's a little bit after 6am Sunday - needless to say jetlag isn't treating me well but today should be the last day of it. With tomorrow being the official start of the Mobile World Congress and over 60,000 attendees it will definitely be a busy and fun four days. Today our team will be running through final preparations for the show, ensuring our booth space and demo stations are set up and enjoying Barcelona before everyone is consumed with things.

One of the cool things about the show this year for me are all of the awesome demos that we'll be showing. For those of you who will be attending the show make sure you stop by. If you're unable to don't worry - I'll be posting more info about the various demos.

Phones at Mobile World Congress
As for me I'll have 8 phones with me for demos, whether it's in our booth, in our meeting space with executives or out and about when talking to people. Which one of these is my favorite? Well they each have their pros and cons and I'm not going to say ;o)

You can bet I'll be walking around and checking out all of the new devices and services that will be shown this week. Definitely is going to be a great week here and I'll try to post as often as possible to share any new news about Adobe's mobile technologies.

Adobe at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona
Adobe at Mobile World Congress
It's almost here, the annual gathering of the world's mobile industry players at Mobile World Congress (previously known as 3GSM) will be happening from 11-14 Feb. The 4 day event will be in Barcelona, Spain again this year and Adobe will be there with a booth presence and meeting room spaces. If you are planning on attending then be sure to stop by our booth (Hall 1 Stand 1E05) to see examples of Adobe technologies and solutions for mobile devices including Flash Lite, Flash Cast and Flash Home.

This will be my fourth time attending this conference and I find it to be one of the most exciting and exhausting conferences each year. If the turn out last year is any indication, the number of companies and devices they'll be showing will be amazing. It's at this conference where device manufacturers show off their new mobile devices that will be available this year for consumers to purchase and for technology companies to unveil and demonstrate their technologies and how it will improve consumers lives.

I'll be doing some live demos of mobile authoring and showing new technologies in our booth in addition to meeting with a wide range of customers and partners. When I'm not busy with those things my time will be spent walking through each of the eight conference halls and checking out things.

One thing that I'm looking forward to is meeting up with Flash Lite developers who attend the conference or who will be in the Barcelona area during that week. For the past few years we've all gone out for some food and drinks to meet up and discuss things.

A Presenters Best Friend - Kensington Wireless Presenter
Kensington Si600 Wireless Presenter
Given that I do a lot of presentations both internally and externally I've been looking for a device that would allow me to not be physically tied to my laptop to control my presentation slides. Being able to walk away from the podium or stage and advance my slides is important and I didn't want a solution that would be to complex or involved.

Kensington Si600 Wireless Presenter
So 2 weeks ago I was given the Kensington Si600 Wireless Presenter with laser pointer to use while in Asia and I must say that it's fantastic. It's small and fits comfortably in the palm of my hand. Smaller the better since I travel often. There's a soft rubber covering on the back of the device and is powered by 2 AAA batteries.

Kensington Si600 Wireless Presenter
Kensington Si600 Wireless Presenter
To connect to your computer you remove this very small USB receiver that conveniently stores in the base of the device. When it's inserted into the device it turns it off, when you remove it then it automatically turns the device on and you can then use any of the four buttons.

Kensington Si600 Wireless Presenter
There are four buttons: next slide, previous slide, blank screen and laser pointer. The laser pointer function is useful for drawing attention to specific areas of a slide while talking.

I've only used it with Powerpoint 2003 but assume it will work with any version of Powerpoint as well as Apple Keynote. So if you do a lot of presenting you may want to take a look at a wireless device like the Kensington Si600. There are other wireless presentation options out there and while I haven't had a chance to try them out I'm very happy with this Kensington device. Post any questions you have about the device and I'll answer them.

MAX Japan - Mobile is Everywhere
Shibuya, Japan

The last MAX 2007 conference is finished and it's been an amazing tour de force around the world. First Chicago, then Barcelona and now Tokyo. It's incredible to see presentations by designers and developers in each region and the ideas that they're sharing. There's definitely a wide range of Flash Lite that's being created and sold here in Japan, some of it is only applicable for the market here while others could easily be re-purposed in other countries.

Mobile is alive and doing very well here in Japan. Besides 3G being everywhere (which is nice), 85% of all handsets that are shipping in Japan are Flash enabled, meaning they have some version of Flash Lite pre-installed. That number will increase over time.

There were five mobile related sessions here in Tokyo on Thursday and even though four of them were presented in Japanese the information presented was so good that I was able to follow along and get a good idea of what was being shown. Some of the highlights included presentations from CELL mobile, DeNA and Neuromagic. I'm trying to get some of their content to share in another post to help inspire others of the types of experiences they're creating.

For my presentation I showed examples of Flash Lite content from developers around the world as well as numerous handsets that use Flash Lite for the UI. Thanks to all of the developers who allowed me to show their work to the attendees - they really liked it. There's a lot of innovative uses of Flash Lite for UI that I'm just recently learning about and will be posting some video clips shortly. If you're interested you can download my MAX 2007 Japan presentation but be warned it's in Japanese.

Now off to some sightseeing and eating some of the best fresh fish in the world.

Traveling to Asia for MAX Japan and Nokia Developer Event
Asia trip

Tonight I'm leaving for Asia for the next 10 days where I'll be speaking at two conferences about Flash Lite. First I'll be speaking about developing Flash Lite applications for Nokia devices at the Nokia App Summit 2.0 in Bangkok. Attendees are Forum Nokia PRO developers from all over APAC and I'm excited about the opportunity to discuss with them creating and selling Flash Lite content.

Then the middle of next week I'm off to Tokyo for MAX Japan where I'll be speaking about Flash Lite with an appropriately named session "Must-see! Adobe Mobile Device from overseas and the possibilities for streaming Flash content to mobile devices in Japan". What I'll be showing is a wide and diverse range of Flash Lite content from developers around the world and several examples of UIs built with Flash Lite from various OEMS including LG, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

Like my other presentations I'll be posting them here on my site once I'm done.

Download My Presentations
It's taken some time but I'm now posting PDF versions of my presentations on my site for anyone to download. You can find links to them listed on the right hand side of my site in the "Presentations" section and currently I have them from the BREW developer conference, Flashforward and the MAX events this year. As I have time I'll be adding previous conference presentations.

Feel free to reference the data and information in these presentations. My hope is that by sharing this information you (the developer community) will have more information available to you about Flash Lite on mobile devices. If you have any feedback about my presentations please leave a comment here.

Flash Lite 3 Session at MAX North America
Flash Player Logo
Less than one week away and I'm really excited to be presenting my session on Flash Lite 3. Lots of very cool things to show besides support for Flash Video which we've already mentioned earlier this year. I will be giving my session twice:
  • Monday, October 1 (3:15-4:15pm)
  • Tuesday, October 2 (4:00-5:00pm)
Don't forget to sign-up for the other mobile sessions - lots of good topics being presented by some of the best mobile Flash developers today.

Hopefully you've already registered for MAX North America because as of yesterday it's now sold out. This is awesome and the first time it's happened, however if you didn't already register or were planning on registering on site then you won't be able to attend. Don't worry though because I will be posting my presentation around mid-October and I believe the MAX events team is looking at ways to film most of the MAX sessions and to make them available for viewing.

Creating and Selling Your Mobile Flash Content - Flashforward Presentation
Flash Lite Success
Thanks to everyone that attended my session last Wednesday at Flashforward in Boston. It was great talking to a wide range of people with diverse professions: artists, graphic designers, character animators, Flash developers, and others. The ideas and use cases for Flash Lite varied from person to person and they were all great.

Based on all of the positive feedback from my session I'm posting my presentation here for download (5 MB PDF). There's some new information in my presentation that's pertinent to Flash Lite developers and business decision makers. I'll extract some of these details and make separate blog posts today/tomorrow.

Special thanks to the following individuals for allowing me to show their Flash Lite work during my session: Aral Balkan, i2fly (Vivek), Liz Myers, Moket (Dale Rankine), Shockwave, and Shou Ji Flash (CMCC).

Something interesting and meaningful I found out was that a designer or animator may not be interested in selling their content but instead may want to take their digital portfolio with them and to have it accessible on a non-device, such as a mobile phone (Nokia or Sony Ericsson) or a consumer electronic device (iRiver Clix). This way if they're having a conversation with someone instead of giving them a business card or a web URL to remember they can show them their work right there on a device. Pretty cool idea and I'd be interested to hear if anyone out there today is doing something similar.

Now it's back to preparing for my Flash Lite 3 presentation for MAX North America next week in Chicago - more details soon.

Heading to Boston for Flashforward
It's almost here and I'm getting everything ready for my session on Wednesday. Devices, chargers, cables - it's not as easy as it seems especially when going through security. Here's a quick list of the things I'll be bringing with me:
  • Several Nokia phones and 1 new model
  • 1 Sony Ericsson phone
  • 2 Samsung phones
  • HDV camera
  • Cingular 3G wireless broadband card (first time using it)
  • Numerous cables, adaptors and chargers
Weather looks like it will be comfortable but a little warmer compared to San Francisco and will try to make some time to walk around the city. Looking forward to meeting up with those of you interested in mobile and seeing what you're working on.

MAX US Pre-Event Session: Introduction to Flash Lite 2
MAX US pre-event session: Flash Lite 2
There are still a few spaces available for the Introduction to Flash Lite 2 session that is being held the day before the official start of the MAX North America conference. If you're getting into mobile this is a great crash course to help you understand the mobile ecosystem, leverage your existing desktop/web skills and find out how to create Flash Lite content.

This is an all day session (9am - 5pm CST) on Sunday 30 September and does require an additional fee to register. You can sign-up for this session when you register for MAX or modify your existing registration.

Mobile Conference Guide for MAX 2007?
Adobe MAX mobile conference guide
The Adobe MAX North America conference is one month away and I thought I'd ask you (the community) if you would find it beneficial to have a mobile conference guide for the MAX conference. Something that attendees could reference easily on their phone without having to flip through a printed brochure. For previous MAX conferences and other events (Flashforward, 3GSM, etc...) some Flash Lite developers created mobile conference guides and most of them were really good.

Is anyone working on one? I was thinking about creating one but wanted to see if there were other Flash Lite developers already in the process. Some of the things I'm thinking about are: distributing the app to attendees, providing updates, screen sizes and the addressable devices.

If you're attending MAX North America or Europe and are interested in a mobile version of the conference guide, what are the top 3 features you'd like to have? Leave your ideas in the comments section.

Speaking at Flashforward Boston
Flashforward Boston 2007
I'm excited - I'll be speaking at Flashforward Boston on the afternoon of Wednesday 19 September about Creating and Selling Your Mobile Flash Content. This will be more of an introductory type of session to help educate non-mobile developers about how to get started and to discuss ways in which they can sell their Flash Lite content.

There will be some other mobile related sessions you can attend: Designing Engaging Mobile Experiences and The Art and Zen of Mobile Games Using Flash

It's been a while since I last spoke at an industry event and I'm looking forward to getting back out there to discuss ideas with designers and developers. Plus it will be cool to be at Flashforward to watch some of the other presenters who will be showing cool new things. Always a good time.

MAX Taipei
MAX Taipei
After 15 hours of traveling from San Francisco, I arrived last night in Taipei and this morning (2 Nov) I gave part of the mobile portion of the key note for MAX Taipei. Overall the keynote went very well and talking to several of the 500 attendees they were excited about Apollo, future versions of our products and the new mobile emulation tool.

There were a few familiar people that I spoke with this morning and I'm looking forward to my mobile session tomorrow where I'll be talking about "Future of Mobile Content Creation". If time permits I'll also be showing a Flash Lite 2.0 wallpaper created and running on the new Nokia 5300, which is a Series 40 device.

This is my second time to Taipei and the people here are very pleasant and friendly, however both times I've been here it's been raining. Good thing is the weather is starting to clear up so hopefully I'll be able to take a walk this afternoon and go to the top of the 101 tower - the tallest building in the world.

Tomorrow afternoon I leave for Singapore where I'll be meeting with some customers and also speaking at MAX Singapore which starts next Tuesday (7 Nov). I'll post more info about my trip early next week.

MAX Conference Guide in Flash Lite?
MAX US Flash Lite event guide request
So with MAX US starting on 24 October I thought it would be good to see if anyone is planning on creating or has already created an event guide using Flash Lite. It can be either Flash Lite 2.0 or 1.1 and would work on any handset that supports Flash Lite, wheter it's pre-installed or using a developer version of Flash Lite player.

You can visit the Adobe MAX US event web site to gather images, schedule, session information and other information you can use in your application.

This is not an official Adobe MAX conference request, instead I thought I'd reach out to the community to see what could be created. Next week I will be adding a page to my site for the downloads of these event guides by the community so anyone can download them. They can be either submitted as a SIS file (Symbian installer package) or SWF file.

If you have any questions about this you can leave a comment. If you want to share your Flash Lite MAX US event guide you can send it to me and I'll upload it to my site (b perry at adobe dot com) for anyone to download.

In San Diego for the BREW Developers Conference
San DiegoIf you frequent by blog you've probably noticed that I haven't posted any new information for a few weeks and there's good reason for that - I've been very, very busy working on a new project that involves Flash Lite and BREW ;o)

Starting tomorrow (31 May) I'll be able to share more details of what we've been up to and if you're a Flash, Flash Lite or BREW developer I'm sure you'll be interested.

In the mean time I'm down here in San Diego today getting prepared for the BREW 2006 Conference which starts tomorrow and lasts through Friday. If you're going to be attending the conference you can stop by and visit our booth (#46) and we'll have two presentations: (Thursday) Creating Flash Applications on BREW Handsets and (Friday) Flash & BREW: Improve Revenue with Rich Content.

Expect daily updates from me this week about what we're doing here as well as some additional information.

webDU 2006: Creating Flash Lite 2 Video Applications
webDU 2006It's taken longer than I wanted to but my "Creating Flash Lite 2 Video Applications" presentation and source files are now available for download (13MB zip file).

I had an awesome time at the webDU conference in Sydney back in early March and the overall vibe from everyone was very positive. Definitely worth checking out next year as I'm sure Geoff and team will do a fantastic job again.

This presentation and source files were meant to give developers an overview about the new device video features in Flash Lite 2 and ideas they can use to start creating their own video based applications.

By the way, I'll be providing more sample files over the next few weeks both for Flash Lite 2 and 1.1.

Adobe at 3GSM World Congress 2006
If you're going to be attending 3GSM World Congress 2006 in Barcelona, Spain in mid-February, make sure you stop by and visit the Adobe booth. We'll be showing some new things in addition to having demonstrations of tools and technologies.

In my opinion this is the best conference targeted towards the mobile space every year and it's always exciting to see what will be shown. I'll be there meeting with some key companies and learning more about future trends for devices, data services and everything else that's interesting.

If you're a developer it would be great to have the chance to meet you as well. Shoot me an email and perhaps we can schedule a time for a bunch of us to meet up to discuss things.

Catching Up From MAX
Images from MAX

It was great meeting a lot of you at MAX two weeks ago and being able to see and hear first hand your thoughts about Flash on mobile devices as well as your excitement about the next version of Flash Lite - Flash Lite 2.0.

For those of you who weren't able to attend MAX you can watch the keynotes from days 1 and 2. Day 2 has three seperate clips pertaining to mobile and devices: Mobile and Devices, Mobile Demos and Mobile UI.

I wanted to let those of you who I met at MAX that I haven't forgotten about you and will be touching base later this week as I finish catching up on emails.

Flash Lite Conference Guide for MAX
With MAX a week away I thought it would be a good time to ask the community the following two questions:

1) If there were a Flash Lite conference guide for MAX would you use it?
2) If you've created one would you mind sharing it?

If you've created a conference guide and would like to share it please send it to me (bperry at macromedia dot com). We're looking for a few good conference guides to promote during MAX and afterwards in various marketing efforts.

Also if you're planning on attending MAX and have a supported Flash Lite handset leave a comment - thanks.
