Traveling to Asia for MAX Japan and Nokia Developer Event
Asia trip

Tonight I'm leaving for Asia for the next 10 days where I'll be speaking at two conferences about Flash Lite. First I'll be speaking about developing Flash Lite applications for Nokia devices at the Nokia App Summit 2.0 in Bangkok. Attendees are Forum Nokia PRO developers from all over APAC and I'm excited about the opportunity to discuss with them creating and selling Flash Lite content.

Then the middle of next week I'm off to Tokyo for MAX Japan where I'll be speaking about Flash Lite with an appropriately named session "Must-see! Adobe Mobile Device from overseas and the possibilities for streaming Flash content to mobile devices in Japan". What I'll be showing is a wide and diverse range of Flash Lite content from developers around the world and several examples of UIs built with Flash Lite from various OEMS including LG, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

Like my other presentations I'll be posting them here on my site once I'm done.

MAX Europe - What a Great Time
This post is a few days late due to travel through Europe but I wanted to say 'gracias' to everyone I met in Barcelona from this past Saturday through Wednesday. The MAX Europe event in Barcelona had a great turnout and I got a sense of talking to attendees and walking around that the vibe there was good.

Monday evening was especially fun when we had a little get together for food with local and regional Flash Lite developers and some people from Nokia. Having a chance to talk face to face with developers to hear what's working, issues they're having, how we may be able to help out and to see what they've been working is so valuable and I hope to do more in person developer meetings starting in the next few months.

There's a lot of cool Flash Lite applications being developed in Spain and Italy and once their work is exposed to more people I'm sure they'll get more attention. I don't have any photos from that evening but I'm sure if you do a search on Flickr you will find them soon.

On Monday my Flash Lite 3 session was well attended and even though I finished my presentation and demos earlier then I planned it allowed time for a lot of Q&A. Given the amount and types of questions being asked I get the feeling that the developer community is really interested in Flash Lite 3 and is waiting to start creating some new types of experiences.

Tuesday evening I did the sneak peek for Flash Home and it was awesome to show some new stuff that we're working on. The response to one of the features I showed (automatically changing the home screen background based on the location of the incoming call) was very well received. Thanks to all of the engineers and QA back in San Francisco who have been working on Flash Home over the past several months - the attendees really liked it.

Over the next few days expect more posts on Flash Lite 3 and other topics.

Heading to Boston for Flashforward
It's almost here and I'm getting everything ready for my session on Wednesday. Devices, chargers, cables - it's not as easy as it seems especially when going through security. Here's a quick list of the things I'll be bringing with me:
  • Several Nokia phones and 1 new model
  • 1 Sony Ericsson phone
  • 2 Samsung phones
  • HDV camera
  • Cingular 3G wireless broadband card (first time using it)
  • Numerous cables, adaptors and chargers
Weather looks like it will be comfortable but a little warmer compared to San Francisco and will try to make some time to walk around the city. Looking forward to meeting up with those of you interested in mobile and seeing what you're working on.

Traveling to Beijing for 12 Days
Beijing
Well it's about 10am Saturday and I'm here at the San Francisco International Terminal waiting for my flight to Beijing, China. I'll be there for the next 2 weeks for business as well as meeting with several content publishers, Flash Lite developers and other customers. Given this is my first time to China I'm really excited about getting some sight seeing in on the weekends, especially the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City.

It's a 12+ hour non-stop flight and I'm looking forward to catching up on things from the past few weeks. These included posting some highlights from 2 recent conferences: 3GSM (Barcelona) and the Game Developer Conference (San Francisco). Look for some additional posts over the next few days.

Robot Greeter in Seoul Airport
Robot Greeter in Seoul
When I was traveling through Seoul back in mid-Nov for the MAX Korea conference, I came across this autonomous robot at the Seoul airport when I was leaving.

My impression was it was meant to be an airport greeter for departing passengers and to provide real-time information about flights, locations and amenities via an interactive touchscreen interface. Couldn't tell if it was done in Flash or not but it was nicely done. It was helpful and did provide the information I was looking for even though I already had a good idea of where I needed to go.

Overall it was pretty cool and what I noticed was that some kids would come right up to it and start talking and touching it's screen, however older people would make an effort to avoid it by walking around. Given that Korea is so far ahead of the US in terms of technology, I don't expect to see a robot greeter in the San Francisco airport any time soon - too bad.

update: because of bandwidth issues by my provider I had to remove the direct video on my site and instead point to the original video on YouTube.

MAX Taipei
MAX Taipei
After 15 hours of traveling from San Francisco, I arrived last night in Taipei and this morning (2 Nov) I gave part of the mobile portion of the key note for MAX Taipei. Overall the keynote went very well and talking to several of the 500 attendees they were excited about Apollo, future versions of our products and the new mobile emulation tool.

There were a few familiar people that I spoke with this morning and I'm looking forward to my mobile session tomorrow where I'll be talking about "Future of Mobile Content Creation". If time permits I'll also be showing a Flash Lite 2.0 wallpaper created and running on the new Nokia 5300, which is a Series 40 device.

This is my second time to Taipei and the people here are very pleasant and friendly, however both times I've been here it's been raining. Good thing is the weather is starting to clear up so hopefully I'll be able to take a walk this afternoon and go to the top of the 101 tower - the tallest building in the world.

Tomorrow afternoon I leave for Singapore where I'll be meeting with some customers and also speaking at MAX Singapore which starts next Tuesday (7 Nov). I'll post more info about my trip early next week.

Heading to Las Vegas for CTIA
I'm leaving for Las Vegas this morning for the CTIA Wireless conference where I'll be meeting with companies and some developers over the next 2 days to talk about our Flash mobile technologies. Besides talking with people it's also a chance for me to walk around the convention floor and to see what other companies are doing in the wireless space.

It's been over a year since I've last been to Las Vegas and I'm hoping the weather there is a bit better than it has been here in San Francisco lately - rain, rain, rain.

In Sydney for webDU
It's almost 2pm here in Sydney and it's a beautiful day outside. This is my first time to Sydney and my first webDU conference and I'm really looking forward to it.

I'll be doing part of the keynote Thursday morning and will have a session later that afternoon "Creating Flash Lite 2 Video Applications" which should be neat. If you're going to be attending make sure you stop by and say hi.

There will also be two other mobile centric presentations which I'll be checking out:
- Flash Lite mobile sensing & interaction with the physical world (Christopher Blair)
- The Life Cycle of a Flash Lite 1.1 Application (Dale Rankine)

If time permits I'll be posting photos/video from the conference.

A Night Out in Barcelona
Barcelona dinnerThe past 15 days have been very busy but in a positive way and I wanted to say 'thanks' to all of the mobile Flash developers that hung out with me and a few other Adobe mobile people on Wednesday evening (15 February) in Barcelona.

These types of social get togethers are great ways to have people catch up on things, meet new friends and most importantly to have a good time.

On a side note I'm still trying to get my other photos organized. When you take photos with numerous devices it takes some time to get them all gathered up, organized and uploaded for all to see. Hopefully this will happen before this Sunday.

3GSM Barcelona - Sightseeing
Barcelona at nightAfter 15 hours of traveling yesterday, around 3pm local time I along with several other Adobe people arrived in Barcelona in preparation for 3GSM World Congress which starts tomorrow (13 Feb) and ends on Thursday (16 Feb).

It's my first time to Barcelona and so far so good. We spent last night walking around, having food and drinks and just observing the local culture. Even at 10pm the streets were crowded and the eateries were still busy.

Today I'm getting everything ready for this week: demo's, phones, meeting notes, business cards, etc... There's no doubt in my mind that this year it's going to be awesome and for those of you who are unable to attend I plan on posting video clips each night of the cool things I saw each day. The first of these postings should be Monday evening.

If you're going to be attending 3GSM be sure to stop by the Adobe booth to check out what we and some of our partners have been working on - it's located in Hall 2.0, Stand E 47a.

Blogging from 31,000 Feet Above the Pacific
Back in October I was on a Luftansa flight from Munich to San Francisco and they had the in-flight Connexion wireless internet service available. I did a live breeze broadcast from my seat and it was really cool. One bad thing about doing it back in October was my laptop ran out of battery power after 3 hours so my session was cut short.

Imagine my suprise when they announced after take-off that the Singapore Airlines flight I'm on from Hong Kong to San Francisco now offers the same Connexion wireless service and I have a power plug in my seat - nice.

Here's a quick video clip I just shot of the upper deck of this 747-400 with my Nokia N90, transferred to my laptop via Bluetooth, converted to Flash video, uploaded to my server and made available for you to view.

It's amazing to think that with the technology today anyone can share information about themselves whether it's text, voice, images or video from anywhere in the world. Only 9 more hours until I land, time to answer those emails.

Heading Home from Singapore
I'm currently in Hong Kong where it's about 7pm local time waiting for my connecting flight to San Francisco which won't land until 6pm PDT Monday. 12 hours of flying - good thing on the flight back my seat will have a power outlet so I can continue to catch up on emails and other things since I've been away since 4 January.

Over the past 11 days I've had the great opportunity to meet directly with a wide range of people in Seoul and Singapore including Flash developers, mobile content developers, UI designers for OEMs and content providers. One developer, Dale Rankine actually made the trip from Brisbane, Australia to Seoul to become certified as a Flash Lite 1.1 Instructor. There's definitely a lot going on in APAC and I will be traveling back to this region soon.

You can check out this video clip I shot yesterday with my Nokia N90 - it's a view of an outdoor dining/pub area called Boat Quay which is along the Singapore river. It looks ominous with the dark clouds but luckily it didn't rain that day.

Let me know what you think of viewing video instead of photos - I may start to add more video to my blogs as I think it can be more interesting.

If you've emailed me in the past week or so I'll be replying to you within the next few days - thanks for your patience.

In Seoul for Flash Lite Instructor Certification
Seoul, South KoreaI'm in Seoul with a few Adobe people and over the next 4 days we'll be certifying 19 instructors who will be able to offer Flash Lite 1.1 curriculum training here in South Korea and Australia. Besides the cold weather (about 20 degrees F) I'm having a great here enjoying the local food, spending time with local Flash Lite developers and catching up on emails when I can.

Next stop is Singapore on 11 Jan.

Live Video at 33,000 Feet
I'm blogging right now live from 33,000 feet above Greenland onboard a Lufthansa flight using their FlyNet wifi service. $30 USD for unlimited use for the entire duration of the flight, which in my case is an 11 hour flight from Munich > San Francisco. Only 7 more hours to go.

Currently I'm broadcasting live video from my seat via my Breeze room and will be until my laptop battery runs out. You can check it out here: http://macromedia.breezecentral.com/bperry/

This is so cool.

MAX Bangalore
Normally I would follow up right after a conference with my impressions but over the past two weeks I've found myself working on some really cool internal projects that have taken up almost all of my time. Now that I have some free time I thought it would be good to recap my trip to Bangalore.

First off, the people in Bangalore are incredibly helpful and very polite. Everywhere I went people were smiling and offering to help me. The weather was more comfortable than Delhi however the traffic seemed more hectic.

There were around 320 attendees during the two days, more than attended the same conference last year which shows there's a growing interest from designers and developers in Macromedia products and technologies.

My two sessions went very well and I decided to try a few new things which seemed to work very well - I'll be trying these when I speak at FITC on April 9th. Overall everyone seemed to comprehend the value of using Flash to not only create mobile content but to create a much more compelling user experience. A good indicator for me as to whether I was able to get my messages across was the enthusiasm of the attendees afterwards about getting involved with creating Flash Lite content. A majority of people said they would start creating some content and I'm looking forward to them submitting their work to the Macromedia Flash Lite Exchange.

Again, thanks to everyone who attended and making my time there enjoyable. I hope to be back next year if not sooner.

MAX New Delhi
The second stop on our three city tour found us in New Delhi and for the two days we were there it was interesting. Greg, James and Chak had good sessions on both days (14th and 15th) but on Tuesday (15th) I ran into some technical difficulties during my second presentation. I had no internet connectivity for my laptop and I had no GPRS connection on my handset so I was unable to show some dynamic Flash Lite apps on my phone.

The audience seemed to understand these problems and it didn't seem to affect them in any negative way, in fact after my presentation I was swarmed with people asking lots and lots of questions about developing Flash Lite content, how they can get SWF files onto their handsets or some ideas they have for creating their own Flash Lite content.

One company I spoke with, who currently does application development for all of the operators in India and have expanded to China and Latin America was interested in creating a IM client based on Flash Lite. They had a demo version they put together and for a first attempt it was pretty good.

For me it's exciting to be able to meet with people face-to-face to find out first hand what their thoughts are regarding Flash Lite, any technical questions they may have and how I and Macromedia can assist them.

Besides being at the conference for two days, the local Macromedia people took us to some excellent restaurants where we enjoyed some real ethnic punjabi cuisine. Absolutely delicious! You can take a look at some photos I took while in New Delhi.

Next stop, Bangalore.

MAX Singapore - Day 2
Finding a good internet connection has been difficult and I apologize for the lack of updates.

Last Thursday (10th) was my turn on stage to discuss both the Mobile Developer Program and Creating Dynamic Flash Lite 1.1 Applications. Both of my sessions went very well and I had a great audience who initially was quiet but by the end they were clapping and participating more.

It seemed like they really saw the potential and how easy it was to create FL content with Flash. I spent less than 10 minutes creating a new FL app from scratch, testing it, transferring it to my phone and then playing it. Other highlights included the various FL examples I showed, and the mobile experience examples that our XD team has been working on.

In addition to meeting with attendees, I was interviewed by various print media from Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore who were interested in learning more about Flash and mobile devices. Most of the reporters I spoke with had never seen Flash content on a mobile phone and were interested in learning more about the types of content that could be created using Flash, such as applications, screen savers, ringtones and others.

Then on Friday (11th) Greg Rewis and I were interviewed by a regional TV station CNA (Channel News Asia) for their weekly IT segment. Greg discussed the various Macromedia tools and where we're heading in the future and I discussed Flash on mobile and showed some examples of FlashCast and the Flash UI found on the Samsung SCH-S260 handset now available in South Korea.

The news segment is supposed to air on 3/25 in Singapore so if you live in the SE Asia area and receive CNA then make sure to check it out. Once I receive my copy of the show segment I'll be encoding it and making it available here on my site.

Overall I had a fantastic time in Singapore and again I want to say "thanks" to everyone who made it such a success. I'm looking forward to speaking again next year.

MAX Singapore - first day
I arrived in Singapore yesterday afternoon after 20 hours of traveling from San Francisco and decided the best thing for me to avoid jet lag was to stay up. So far I can say it hasn't hit me but I'll find out as the day goes on.

MAX Singapore started about 3 hours ago and it's going great - about 300 people have showed up so far and I expect a few late comers to show up throughout the morning.

Greg Rewis gave a good keynote discussing user experiences and how to design and develop for them while maintaining your creativity. He also gave the next two presentations "ActionScript for Designers" and "Deconstructing Flash Video"- both well received. He's had a busy morning and will be presenting all of the morning tracks on Thursday. Later this afternoon James Talbott and Titu Minhas will be presenting their respected topics.

Tomorrow afternoon are the Mobile and Devices sessions and I'll be presenting for two of them: "Mobile Developer Program" and "Creating Dynamic Flash Lite 1.1 Applications". I'll also have a few sneak peaks of future tools and giveaways for those in attendance.

If you haven't noticed I've been sending photos from my Nokia 6630 to my web site via Text America. You can see the latest photo in the top right of my home page and if you click on it you'll be able to see previous photos.

Expect more updates later this evening.

MAX Singapore and MAX India - Speaking about Flash on Mobile Devices
MAX_APTo reach a more global audience I'll be traveling to Singapore, New Delhi and Bangalore India to speak about Flash on mobile devices at the three MAX conferences being held in the Asia Pacific region. The dates are as follows:

This will be my first time to these countries and I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone and being able to hear from other developers their thoughts about the different Macromedia products and mobile.

If you live in any of these cities definitely make an attempt to attend one of these conferences and if you do make sure to stop by and say hi.

During this time I'll have limited access to email and will try to update my site while I'm there with details and photos. Also, if you can recommend any good places to eat in any of these cities or tourist locations please leave a comment - thanks.

Speaking at FITC About Developing Flash Content for Handsets
Flash In The CanGreat news, I've been confirmed as a speaker for the upcoming FITC conference being held in Toronto from April 9-11. My session is titled "Flash is Mobile: Developing for Handsets" and I'll be covering a lot of information about creating Flash Lite content as well as previewing some new things that we're working on.

I'm really looking forward to attending some of the other sessions in addition to hanging out with some old friends. This will be my first time traveling to Toronto and I'd be interested in meeting up with anyone while I'm there who has specific questions about Flash on non-PCs or wants to show me some of their work. If you'd like to meet up shoot me an email and let's try to work something out.

If you haven't yet signed up for the conference make sure you do - it's shaping up to be one of the best conferences this year.

Busy in London
After a 10 hour flight, 30 minute train ride and a 10 minute taxi, I've finally checked into my hotel here in London. This is my first time here and London and although I'll only be here for 2 days, I'm looking forward to making the most of it. It's certainly a lively city and there's a lot of people out-and-about catching up on their Christmas shopping and such.

One thing I've noticed after walking around is that there are a lot of mobile phone shops, just about two on every street corner. I've seen some very cool phones, including some showing streaming video using Vodafone's live! 3G network.

So I'm here on business, assisting with some mobile device training and if you're interested in learning about possible future training classes you can contact Macromedia and I'll provide you with more information.

While I'm here I won't be updating my site with any content, expect that to happen at the end of the week once I'm back in San Francisco.

2 More Weeks in Bangkok, Thailand
This past June I was in Bangkok, Thailand for three weeks working on a Flash-based RIA for a client. It turns out that the client was impressed by the usability mock-ups I produced that they've asked me to come back out for an additional two weeks of work. I had a fantastic time there in June and I'm looking forward to working with the same group of people again.

One thing I noticed last time I was there was there are shopping malls that sell so many types of mobile phones. It's incredible to see the variety of moblie phones, accessories and the number of vendors. I'll try to take some photos to post to show everyone what I'm talking about.

So for the next two weeks the updates to my site may not be as frequent as I'd like them to be but I'll do my best to answer any questions any of you may email me. If anyone can recommend some cool places to check out in or around Bangkok, let me know!
